This week distinguished former Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor turned 85. In addition to being the first woman appointed to the court, Justice O’Connor became a crucial swing vote during her 25-year tenure.
But not to be overlooked is the significant contribution she has made to our civic life in the years since. As a Colonial Williamsburg trustee for 12 years and the founder of icivics.org, Justice O’Connor has been a fierce and relentless advocate for the importance of citizenship education.
In 2011 Colonial Williamsburg awarded Justice O’Connor its highest honor, the Churchill Bell.
Today we honor her by presenting a video about the responsibilities of citizenship featuring Justice O’Connor, historian Gordon Wood and journalists Jim Lehrer and Andrea Mitchell.
