That’s right, TURN is reTURNing (pun intended) to Williamsburg and will be filming in the Historic Area Monday, Nov. 9. Guests planning to visit the Revolutionary City may be impacted, so let me walk you through some of the changes taking place.
AMC crews will be in town very very early in the morning Monday, with filming set to begin around 6 a.m. and continuing through 6 p.m. Various parts of the Historic Area will be impacted and some sites may be closed completely.
BOTETOURT STREET TO THE CAPITOL
The following sites will be closed in this area:
- Charlton Coffeehouse
- Charlton Stage (programming is moving to the Palace Stage)
- Millinery Shop (only in the morning, will reopen during the afternoon hours)
The Apothecary, Wig Shop, Raleigh Tavern, Raleigh Tavern Bakery, Silversmith, Golden Ball, Tarpley’s and Kings Arms Tavern will all remain open. Guests can access these sites via back or side doors from Nicholson and Francis streets. Interpreters will be on hand to help guests find their way into the buildings from the unfamiliar locations.
MARKET SQUARE
Last season, Market Square was used to show the Philadelphia skyline on TURN and all of the British soldiers occupying the city. AMC will be filming in this area once again, primarily at the Courthouse, however, much of Market Square will be closed in the afternoon beginning around 1 p.m.
The following sites will be closed in this area:
- The Courthouse
- The Magazine
The Market House will not open for the day until around 3 p.m., so plan your shopping at our new building in the late afternoon!
Due to the filming all day, the following programs have been canceled entirely for Monday:
- Revolution in the Streets
- An Officer’s Message to the People
- RevQuest: Save the Revolution!
There will also be no carriage rides at all Monday. Musket demonstrations will continue at the Military Encampment, however, the muskets will not be fired. Please check our online calendar for a list of all programming that will still take place.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience but I hope you enjoy catching a glimpse of the production! A lot of work goes into this both by AMC and Colonial Williamsburg and it’s a lot of fun to watch. It’s even better to watch TURN and spot our town!

Colonial Williamsburg is a great place to visit and learn. Having lived in Williamsburg for several years and being from the Hampton Roads area, I see it as one of the jewels of Hampton Roads. And the series “Turn” is quite good. But I must say that I agree with Ms. Harlow concerning advanced notice about closures due to filming of the series. Folks coming from out of town especially could be denied part of the Colonial Williamsburg experience due to closures during their visit. With Colonial Williamsburg having issues with attendance in the past few years, creating angst for your visitors is not the way to market the experience positively. Please use the technology at hand (website, internet) to communicate with those that would be planning a visit to Colonial Williamsburg.

Hi, T.W.! As I told Kathleen, we posted this as soon as we possibly could and did use our technology to let everyone know by posting here and to all of our social channels! These things can vary as far as timing goes and we did the best we could. We hope anyone visiting us who saw the filming was able to enjoy it!
Kathleen Harlow says
Excellent series. I would have thought you’d give those coming to Williamsburg at this time more notice. Some are short on time and now they are unable to see what they came to see.
Rachel West says
Hi, Kathleen! We gave as much notice as we possibly could. The timing of these things vary. We hope being able to watch a major production was great to have in its place!

One good Turn deserves another.

Enjoyed watching the filming last season when they were shooting in front of the palace.

Did you get to see the finished product air? I loved watching Benedict Arnold pull the guy off the coach in front of the Palace…I mean, the Shippen home!
Jamie says
YES!! Love Turn!

Me, too, Jamie! Who’s your favorite character?
