You heard that right. The Father of our Nation, the American Cincinnatus, His Excellency, George Washington is packing up and heading out to visit two key primary states—Iowa and New Hampshire.
Gen. Washington is not running for president. He didn’t campaign for office in 1789 or 1792, and he isn’t going to start now. He will be discussing how important it is to participate in the democratic process of electing our leaders. It is our duty as Americans to choose our leaders; a right guaranteed by Congress. Additionally, he’ll talk about how the debates of today actually span centuries. Taxation. Foreign Policy. Religious Liberty. These debates were happening right here on the streets and in the taverns of Williamsburg in the 18th century.
As a former political journalist and forever a history nerd, this campaign merges two of my biggest passions. I am serving as Gen. Washington’s National Field Director and will be joining him in both Iowa and New Hampshire. Gen. Washington will visit a farm, a distillery, and is even planning to throw out the first pitch at a minor league baseball game, among several other events.
But that’s not all. Gen. Washington will be the first non-political figure to deliver a speech at the Des Moines Register’s Soapbox at the Iowa State Fair. Ever. If you’re not familiar with the event, during the Iowa State Fair, candidates for various offices as well as other political figures give speeches and take questions from others on what’s known as a soapbox. We are particularly excited about this!
It starts here. It starts with your participation, your debate, and your vote. While on the campaign trail and back home in Williamsburg, Gen. Washington will also help citizens register to vote if they haven’t already done so.
Make sure you follow Gen. Washington on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for pictures and other information while visiting Iowa and New Hampshire. And keep up with all the excitement at our website, itstartshere2016.org, as well.
See you when we return!
