Did you know Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were Founding Foodies? Both were gardeners who shared an interest in the history and production of food. They experimented with fresh ingredients and unique flavor combinations long before being a “foodie” was considered to be posh and hip!
Not much has changed here in the Revolutionary City in the past 250+ years. Colonial Williamsburg remains a destination for delicious food and fine wine. And while our talented chefs are whipping up amazing dishes daily in our hotel and tavern restaurants, there’s one weekend in September when they pull out all the stops! If you don’t have your tickets for the Labor Day fun, you’re in luck. There are more than a dozen culinary events on the table. Here is a list of my top five—for various palates and budgets!
Bushels & Barrels: Uncorking the Past
$135
Experience southern hospitality dating all the way back to the 18th century. Choose from seafood muddle, fried green tomatoes, historic herb roasted chicken, and the list goes on! Even better? Each dish will be expertly paired with a different wine. In addition to live music, we have it on good authority that a president from the past is expected to stop by to mingle with members of both colonial and modern society. Buy your ticket!
Discover Cava
$50
Okay, you had me at “Cava.” As a lover of all bubbly, this particular event piqued my interest. I mean, who wouldn’t want to hear about (and taste) sparkling wine from the world’s oldest producer of Cava? Codorníu Winery has been doing something right for the past 450 years! See for yourself!
Speakeasy Lounge
$38
Step back into the 1920s for live music, conversation, and two Prohibition drinks from the bar. The intrigue associated with this event has to do with the ambiance and location—or current lack thereof. That’s right. Organizers are keeping the venue hush hush. Our Making History team couldn’t even get you the inside scoop! We do know you’ll need a secret password (revealed that night) to go along with your ticket.
Jefferson, Henry & Mrs. Washington Wine Dinner
$135
This four-course dinner will serve up much more than what’s featured on the menu. Patrick Henry, Martha Washington, and Thomas Jefferson—key players in the American Revolution—will share with you their passion for great food, Virginia wine, and politics! Reserve your seat now.
What’s Shakin’ with Bacon Breakfast
$65
I’m of the mindset that everything tastes better with bacon. This elaborate spread will introduce you to delicious ways to use the breakfast staple, most of which you’ve probably never considered. Bacon Bloody Mary anyone? Save your seat now!
