Round One of “Name that Archaeological Site” was so much fun that we’ve decided to launch a second round for Throwback Thursday! Below are images of four archaeological excavations within Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area. See if you can identify the site. We’ll begin with an easy one……
And now that you’re warmed up, can you identify this project…perhaps our most unusual….from the early 1990s? Look for clues in the image!
The third excavation took place at the west end of town. Does anyone know where it is…or what sits there today?
Finally, a very distant past. Can you get your bearings? You may not be able to identify what’s being excavated, but can you tell where this image was taken? Extra credit will be awarded if you can identify the man using the level!

I will take a guess that the forth image is on the Brush Everard property. The man could be one of the architects Perry, Shaw or Hepburn.
Meredith Poole says
Mike! You’re right!
Mike Myers says
The first site is the Coffeehouse, next is the Bruton Church cemetery, the third is the Public Hospital, the forth I don’t know but could be the ice house. I have no clue who the gentleman is.
Thanks for the challenge.
Meredith Poole says
Congratulations, Mike…you got number 3! The third image is of the Public Hospital, which burned in the mid-1880s. The fourth image is still available for guessing. Anyone??

Gail~
You and Linda have the first two down! Keep thinking about the last two!
Linda Shoun says
First is the Coffeehouse, I think.
From the tombstones, I’m guessing the second is the Bruton Parish churchyard.
Third is perhaps the Wray site with the brickyard, carpenter, coffin maker, etc., that is now under the parking garage.
Last one, no real idea. Neighborhood of the Palace, but my sense of direction is not that good. Perhaps the area around the Matthew Whaley School. And from overall impression, perhaps the man is Mr. Rockefeller?
Meredith Poole says
Linda~
You’re on a roll! Coffeehouse is correct, as is Bruton Parish churchyard. The last one is, indeed, near the Palace, but that’s not Mr. Rockefeller!
