Declaration of Independence shoot at the Capitol (for Guidebook)

This week we’re giving you an inside look at three of the programs that started back up March 16. You’ve already seen Storming the Palace, now check out the Reading of the Declaration of Independence.

If you haven’t seen this program, the title says it all. One of our interpreters, sometimes even Thomas Jefferson himself, reads the Declaration of Independence as the crowd looks on. We’ve all read parts of the Declaration in school, or maybe watched a video. But have you ever heard it in person with the reader dressed in 18th-century clothes? It’s like stepping back in time.

As someone who has been visiting the Revolutionary City for several decades, I know there are some programs that have stuck around and this is one of them. Check out this picture of a reading in 1976! Things have certainly evolved at the Foundation since then.

This photo was taken in 1976 of the Reading of the Declaration. How many changes do you notice?

Everyone is invited and you don’t need an admission ticket to participate. Just come on by! One piece of advice I’d give is to think of some questions you may want to ask our interpreters. You never know who you may run into!

I have been fortunate to have experienced this 2 times when I was visiting Colonial Williamsburg. It was a marvelous experience and I was so proud of our Founding Fathers!! I shed a few tears of happiness and pride when I listened to the reading of this wonderful, original document of freedom. We are blessed!
