From the Today Show to Forbes Magazine, Josh Phelps and Carlo Trinchero have been thrust into the national spotlight for the way they make and market their wines. And for one exciting night, they’ll team up with our talented Colonial Williamsburg chef to lead a culinary revolution we’re confident our Founding Foodies would have loved.
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were visionaries who shared a passion for independence as well as a love for great food and wine. In fact, Jefferson led the charge in bringing vineyards to Virginia (though he never got to see his dream come to fruition during his lifetime). Jefferson’s fondness of vino started a little later in life when he was serving as an ambassador to France and fell in love with the country’s varieties.
On the contrary, you could say childhood friends Phelps and Trinchero were born into the business. Both hail from prominent wine-making families in the Napa Valley and decided to branch out together to create their own label, Taken Wine, under Trinchero Family Estates (the fourth largest wine company in the U.S.). Even more impressive? Both of these entrepreneurs are twentysomethings. While they hope the flavor and complexity of their wines will appeal to all ages, their marketing strategy, their website, and even the names of their wines are targeted to fellow millennials.
That’s right. Do you like your wines like you like your relationship statuses? From Complicated to Taken, you can choose from their Pinot Noir, Cabernet, or Chardonnay. And this summer, you can even update your preference to Available. Phelps tell me they’re in the process of making two more wines in Italy under that name and both should be on the market by June. Now, while the labels may be playful, during an interview with FOX News radio, the pair was quick to clarify that what’s inside the bottle is serious business. Their goal is to prove good wine can be affordable and also respected by new and experienced wine drinkers alike.
In a bold (and in my opinion, admirable) move, these guys aren’t relying on their pedigrees for publicity. Instead, they’re turning to social media and hitting the road to get out and actually meet people and introduce them to their game-changing wines. Enter - Colonial Williamsburg!
