Many of us who live in Hampton Roads woke up to a winter wonderland this morning—complete with icicles and a thick coating of ice on the trees and power lines. In authentic 18th-century fashion, the Historic Area also had to forgo electricity for a couple hours when a transformer blew. But by lunchtime, it was business as usual for just about everyone. So we bundled up, grabbed our cameras, and captured some pretty amazing images to share with you.
Here is a list of what’s open and what’s not. If you do venture out, please be careful. We saw several tree branches crack under the weight of the ice!
- All Exhibition Sites and Trade Shops are open
- All programs are still scheduled
- Raleigh Tavern Bakery will remain closed
- Greenhow, Tarpley, Golden Ball and Mary Dickenson stores are open
- Greenhow Lumber House is open
- Art Museums are open
- No carriage rides
Did you venture out to see us today? If so, please share your pictures. For those of you who can’t come and visit, tell us—which was your favorite shot?

Oh, thank you for the pretty and sparkling pictures. I don’t like in the area (wish I did) and was so hoping that you would post some pictures of the weather today. I was viewing the webcams, but these pictures are treasures of winter in ColonialWilliamsburg!

My favorite is taken through a web of branches. A white fence and a stone walkway can be seen through the web of icy lace. It appears in the slide show just after the house with the sign showing a bee skep and the letter P and H.
Jessica A. Ross says
Thank you, Bella. It was so fun shooting everything through the ice-coated branches!
