Five Fall Things to Do in the Revolutionary City

By Karen Gonzalez

Feeling autumnal? Here are five great fall things to do in the Historic Area over the next five weeks.

More Bricks for Our Walls

Love big fires on cool nights? Then the Firing The Brick Kiln at the Brickyard is for you.

From Nov. 19-23 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., brickmakers will be baking to 20,000 hand-molded bricks in the huge kiln. It’s all for the Market House reconstruction project.

Want to hear more about brickmaking? Check out our podcast.

And sorry…no marshmallows allowed.

Drop Spindle Spinning Class

Nope, this isn’t about sweating on a stationary bike. This is learning how to spin wool yarn the old-fashioned way. After all, it’s getting to be curl-up-in-something-warm time.

You’ll have the opportunity each Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. until Nov. 19.

All the supplies you’ll need are provided.

This class isn’t recommended for the little ones under 10 and any child under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Inspiring Quilts

The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum presents “A Celebration of Quilts.”

Twelve American quilts representing diverse styles from the 18th through 20th centuries are on display in the McCarl Gallery. Through their technique and fabric choices, they tell a fascinating story of the cultures of the makers – from Anglo-Americans to Afro-Americans, Hawaiians to mainlanders, Amish to Mennonites.

Some of the quilts are new to the collection and haven’t been shown publicly until now.

Pie Fixes Everything

What did Martha Washington, Elizabeth Randolph, Anne Geddy, and Christiana Campbell all have in common? Delicious pies to serve their guests, of course!

On Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Taste Studio, you can step back more than 200 years with top executive chefs from Colonial Williamsburg and sample some revolutionary desserts. Just in time to treat your Thanksgiving guests.

Learning from a famous chef AND tasty historic holiday treats. … What could be more fun than that?

Music and Dance

Experience the African-American roots of music commonly heard in colonial America.

At Great Hopes Plantation, the West African culture of rhythms, songs and dances come alive in the crisp night air. Warning: the rhythms are quite infectious and you will have an opportunity to dance along!

This program runs into late November — Check our calendar for dates and times.

Nicely written vignettes of what sounds like quite interesting and fun events. I hope I can make it there before winter.
