The AMC American Revolution drama, “Turn: Washington’s Spies,” is filming in the Revolutionary City on Tuesday, Oct. 14 — and you can watch!
The Historic Area will remain open to the public, but guests may find some sites closed intermittently between the late morning and late afternoon to accommodate filming.
Preparation for the shoot begins at 7 a.m. at the Magazine, which will be closed to the public for the day. Filming is expected to take place in this area between 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. In order to accommodate wide angle shots, guest traffic may be altered at Market Square and the Duke of Gloucester Street for short periods of time.
Other areas impacted may include the Courthouse, the Market House, the Mary Dickinson Store, and the Greenhow Store. Regular Courthouse programs Order in the Court and A Declaration of Independence are expected to go on as scheduled.
Filming is also planned at the Wythe House between 3 and 5 p.m. This won’t affect the Wythe House’s normal operating hours of 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Crews will be setting up and then shooting film at the Governor’s Palace between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The 7:30 p.m. program — Palace Concert: From the Collection won’t be affected. Ticketed guests for this program will enter the property via the stable gate.
The series, which will begin its second season in the spring of 2015, is adapted from the nonfiction book, “Washington’s Spies” by Alexander Rose. The story is centered on a band of young soldiers and civilians who were part of the secret spy ring during the Revolutionary War.
The show’s success coincides with growing popularity of Colonial Williamsburg’s technology-assisted alternate reality games RevQuest: Save the Revolution!, which the Foundation promoted on AMC during the first season of “TURN: Washington’s Spies.” In the games, would-be colonial agents tap classic spycraft to aid the cause of independence, first online at home, then using their mobile devices in the Revolutionary City itself. More than 43,00o people played last year alone.
The series filmed its first season in the Richmond area and the Virginia Tourism Corporation has established the Turn Trail, which pinpoints a series of Revolutionary War locations and film locations for the series.
