The core of 18th century Virginia’s central prison was all that remained when Williamsburg’s restoration began in 1927. During the 1700s, the Public Gaol — pronounced “jail” — had evolved into a walled, three structure compound that numbered among its inmates not only assorted miscreants but the keeper and his family. The Gaol became a county facility in 1780 and, much modified over the years, served until 1910. The restored building was dedicated in 1936.
