Throwback Thursday: Ladies’ costumes of the 18th century

Today on Throwback Thursday, we’re looking at the “hostesses” costumes re-created in the early 20th century. By the 21st century, as researchers learned more about historic dress, hoops became smaller, “figure-shaping foundation garments are worn, and the gown’s neckline and sleeves are proper for the third quarter of the 18th century,” according to Colonial Williamsburg’s Costume Design Center.

Millinery experts and enthusiasts will gather in Colonial Williamsburg’s historic area next week for the Millinery Shop 60th Anniversary Conference. Check the “What’s New” blog for more information on the event next week.
